Unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1963, the Mercedes-Benz 600 was developed to meet an exceptionally ambitious goal: to create the finest automobile in the world. As a true display of Mercedes-Benz’s technological prowess, it quickly became the preferred choice of car for the most influential heads of state, monarchs, industrialists and celebrities of its era. As a reminder, Artcurial also sold Maria Callas’s two Mercedes 600 cars in 2015.

Designed under Paul Bracq’s leadership, this model stands out for its understated and timeless elegance, perfectly suited to its status as a luxurious limousine. The short-wheelbase version, of which only 2,677 were produced between 1964 and 1981, is the most discreet variant of the W100 family.

Fitted with a 6.3-litre V8 engine with mechanical fuel injection producing 250 hp and paired with a four-speed automatic gearbox, it is renowned for its quietness and smoothness. This engine enabled the 600 to deliver remarkable performance for a car weighing almost 2.5 tonnes. The technology behind the 600 was equally exceptional. Its famous high-pressure hydraulic system controlled the windows, seats, doors and boot, whilst its self-levelling air suspension provided a level of comfort that was unrivalled at the time.

Like many Mercedes 600 examples, the car was delivered new to Africa (specifically to Morocco) in its white colour code DB 737, a more modern colour than the DB0050 code used on earlier models, as indicated by its datenkarte. This is in fact the 2,605th of the 2,677 examples produced, making it one of the very last ones to be manufactured, which is incredibly rare on the market nowadays. It is worth mentioning that, similar to many African countries, Morocco reserved ownership of this model exclusively for the Royal Palace. The Royal Palace of Morocco has in fact a significant number of Mercedes 600 examples in its fleet. It was then delivered with a driver’s partition, curtains, a refrigerated bar, a Becker radio at the front and at the back, retractable shelves with lights in the partition, a front-to-rear intercom and air conditioning. Its interior is velvet at the back and leather at the front, typical of luxury cars of that time, as velvet was considered more prestigious; the entire interior is navy blue, reference 904. In 2016, the car was purchased by the current owner from the Ferrari dealership in Torremolinos, Spain, where it was consigned by the Moroccan Consulate in Malaga. The car was then fully restored by Atelier 600, where it has been serviced ever since. It was repainted in its original colour, its curtains and carpets were replaced, the fuel injection pump and brakes were rebuilt; a full servicing was also carried out on the suspension, hydraulic and pneumatic systems. The car now has 55,820 km on the clock, highly likely to be its mileage since new, given the exceptional condition of the interior. The woodwork is in immaculate condition with no chips in the varnish; there are also no signs of wear and tear on the fabrics or leather. Being one of the last produced (which is very rare in itself), this 600 is exceptionally stunning in this configuration; it is in excellent condition and runs flawlessly in every way.

Built largely by hand in the Sindelfingen workshops, the Mercedes-Benz 600 remains one of the most remarkable luxury cars of the 20th century to date, a symbol of uncompromising luxury and engineering developed with no regard for cost.
