At the start of the 1990s, the V10 Renault enjoyed a string of successes in Formula 1: in 1990, Nigel Mansell won 10 races for Williams-Renault and in 1993, Alain Prost secured his fourth title as World Champion in the same team.

It was in this context that the Clio Williams was launched, following on from the Clio 16S. It was a homologation model, of which at least 2500 had to be built to satisfy the motorsport regulations, but given the commercial success this brilliant little car enjoyed, a total of more than 12,000 were sold, in two successive series. It certainly had plenty of appeal, with its 2-litre 16-valve 4-cylinder engine producing 150bhp and taking it to a top speed of 215kph. It was particularly well finished, with attractive Williams blue paintwork, set off by exclusive gold Speedline wheels and inside, blue-faced instrument dials, blue carpets and bucket seats with the Williams ‘W’ logo.

Used from new by Renault Sport’s engineers as a staff car, this Clio Williams has been well preserved in its original condition, inside and out. The odometer is reading 83,030km, which is undoubtedly the total from new. All the model’s special features have been retained, without any significant changes. It is a fine representative of one of the greatest hot hatches of all time, which had an illustrious career in rallying, driven by Philippe Bugalski and Alain Oreille.
