“What really drives Renault Sport is innovation”, its director Christian Contzen explained, adding: “Creating the Spider didn’t really take us that far away from our usual field of work. The Spider is truly innovative, technically as much as socially, even culturally. It’s marvellous how you can use it. (...) It combines sport, escape and freedom.”
Created from a blank sheet of paper and Renault Sport’s first-ever road car, the Spider remains a unique model in Renault's history. At a time when the manufacturer was at the top of its game in Formula 1 with its unbeatable engines, it unveiled at the 1995 Geneva Motor Show this radical mid-engined roadster with a tubular aluminium chassis designed by Fior Technology and clothed in a basic composite body, weighing 930kg. With only one goal in mind: the pleasure of driving, the purest of sensations.
The Spider was assembled by hand in the Alpine factory at Dieppe; initially fitted with a simple aero screen, it later gained a windscreen equipped with a wiper, which was more convenient for regular use. The car offered here is a model of this type, but it is a prototype used by Renault Sport to test a new sequential gearbox, which explains the lack of a central gear lever and certain changes which have been made. This Spider is sold without an engine or gearbox and cannot be registered for use on the road, but its design remains as captivating as ever and it is part of the history of Renault Sport.
