“We were seeking to demonstrate our expertise as engine builders in as many branches of motorsport as possible”, Christian Contzen explained in his book Mes années Renault Sport, when talking about the company’s involvement in Formula 3 during the 1990s. He recalled that the preparation of the engines for this series (derived from the Clio Williams) was entrusted to Sodemo, who was also responsible for the Laguna BTCC engines. Among the chassis suppliers, the most outstanding was Dallara, and in 1996, its F396 model dominated the British, German and Italian championships. Drivers such as Jarno Trulli and Juan Carlo Montoya honed their skills at the wheel of this single-seater, which could be fitted with different engines.
The car we are offering for sale is an F3 Dallara F396 with a Renault F7R engine that is appropriate for Formula 3. Driven in regional races in period by Carlos Tavares, who was in charge of various projects at Renault at the time, it is complete and in well-preserved condition. Kept as it was when it finished its last race nearly 30 years ago, it will need a thorough overhaul before its star shines once again. A very fast car from a series which was the final stepping-stone into Formula 1, it will delight an amateur racing driver in either track races or hill climbs.
