‘Cobra 427’… The mere mention of this name triggers a passionate reaction and a lively discussion about the exceptional performance of Carroll Shelby’s creation. His idea of fitting a big Ford V8 engine into the lightweight and well-designed chassis of the AC Ace gave rise to one of the most amazing sports cars of its era. Following the 289ci (4.7-litre) version, Shelby continued to push the boundaries of performance by fitting a 427ci (7-litre) engine to a modified chassis equipped with coil-spring suspension; its 425bhp transformed the Cobra into a truly formidable dragster for the road. In the 1970s, Brian Angliss emerged; his workshop in England specialised in repairing Cobras and, faced with a shortage of parts, he set about tracking down any remaining stock. By sourcing moulds from various suppliers, he began remanufacturing them and selling them under the ‘Cobra Parts’ brand. His business expanded to the point where it became possible to build almost an entire car, complete with an aluminium body; at the time though, Brian Angliss still regarded himself simply as a parts supplier. Due to very high-demand however, he eventually set up a new company called Autokraft. By using AC tooling and even former employees from the manufacturer, he began producing cars from 1982 onwards to (mildly modernised) specifications of the original model, under the name Autokraft MkIV. During that time, he had secured AC Cars’ approval. Therefore, within the hierarchy of Cobras built after the 1960s, Autokraft’s models rank above the rest and are listed in the famous Shelby Registry. This is the case with this particular model, which is one of only 10 examples believed to be produced by Autokraft with the 427ci engine. A certificate from AC Cars confirms a production date of May 1989. Its owner was the Englishman Steve Hitchins, as evidenced by the registry, who chose blue for the bodywork combined with a tan interior. The powerful 427 is associated with a 4-speed gearbox. Registered in France for over 20 years, this fine example has just been serviced (engine, gearbox and differential oil changes, new filters, carburettor and tyres). It is fitted with a soft top, removable side windows, bumpers and a spare wheel with its changing kit. The original upholstery was redone in black, including the carpets. Ready to hit the road, this exceptional Cobra is no average replica, but one of just ten 427ci examples to come out of the workshop that has ensured the brand’s continuity since the 1970s. A must-see for enthusiasts.
