Contrary to what is sometimes believed, the Alfa Romeo GTAm was based not on the GTA, but on the American version of the GTV 1750 with fuel injection, hence its ‘Am’ moniker. The GTAm models were usually modified by Autodelta and, following a change in the Group 2 regulations, from 1970 their engine capacity was increased to 2 litres, with maximum power of 240bhp at 7500rpm in the most highly developed version. Externally, they were distinguished by their ultra-wide wheels and spectacular wheelarch extensions (often attached with rivets), which gave them a formidable appearance. The GTAm was, moreover, far more radical than the GTA, especially when it came to its uncompromising interior.

The car presented here is a genuine GTAm, which left the factory on 1 October 1970 as an Alfa Romeo 1750 GT Veloce USA (Tipo 105.51), and was then sold on 2 February 1971 in Madrid, as a letter from Alfa Romeo’s historic department confirms. Meanwhile, according to a certificate from Alfa Romeo dated 21 February 1971, the car was prepared for use in competition by Autodelta. In addition, the car is listed with its chassis no. 1532022 in Tony Adriensens’ and Patrick Dasse’s excellent book Alleggerita. There can be no doubt therefore as to its authenticity.

The car is understood to have raced in Italy in 1972, 1973 and 1974, driven by Mauro Sacchini. In 1973, it is believed that it took first place in its class (and seventh overall) in the 4 Hours of Monza, with the Yugoslavian drivers Drago Regvart and Robert Lang, under the colours of the Jolly Club racing team. The car was owned at the time by the tuner Santino Balduzzi. More recently, it has taken part in historical events, such as the 2012 Eggbergrennen, held in Germany near Basel.

In 2014, it was bought from its Liechtenstein-based owner by Auto Neuser, who restored it. It has all the attributes of a car properly prepared in period, with riveted wheelarch extensions, a polyester bonnet, a large fuel tank with a rapid filling system, and an additional oil cooler. It has an old bodyshell and a very stripped-out interior with a bolted half roll cage, a bucket seat, a cut-out switch, a large Jaeger rev counter reading up to 10,000rpm, and a fire extinguisher. The engine was seized and a new engine was therefore rebuilt in Italy, by Alfa Delta Milano, with twin spark plugs per cylinder and an estimated power output of 220bhp. The engine block (number AR00548*96104) corresponding to a 1750 and still equipped with its Spica injection pump will be supplied with the car, along with many spare parts.

This GTAm has the advantage that it has not been subjected to any recent modifications and it exudes a real sense of authenticity. It is estimated that 40 Alfa Romeo GTAm models were built (19 works cars and 21 for privateers). This genuine example represents an especially rare opportunity to acquire the ultimate competition version of the Giulia coupé, a model which achieved many outstanding results in motorsport, whether on track, in rallying or in hill climbs.
