The story of this car is highly original, as Fritz Neuser told us: “In 1987, the director of Alfa Romeo Germany called me to say: ‘I’ve got 14 white Spiders waiting for you here in Frankfurt. I’ll give you a good price.’ He knew that at the time, cars finished in white were unsellable, and I was obliged to take them. To deal with the problem, I decided to modify them and produce a special series of cars.” This was how Auto-Neuser’s 14 ‘Breitspiders’ (‘wide Spiders) came about: fitted with wide ATS wheels, wheelarch extensions and modified suspension, they had body-colour bumpers and spoilers which made the whole car far more elegant than the regular model. “We put them on sale at a much higher price than the standard version and they did very well!”, Neuser recalled, happy to have turned a problem into a profitable operation.
Sold new in April 1987 by Auto-Neuser, this car had several owners before being bought back in 2024 by the Scuderia Neuser, who carried out some work to refurbish it. Its 130bhp two-litre engine is fed by twin Dell’Orto carburettors and the car has attractive leatherette upholstery with red stitching, a Momo steering wheel and a wooden gear knob. We noted a chip in the windscreen. Potential buyers should check whether it is possible to register the car with its wider front and rear track as a ‘Breitspider’ in their country of residence. With its beautiful special finish, this Alfa Romeo 2.0 ‘Breitspider’ is certain to be the only one of its kind at any meetings that its new owner may attend.
