On its stand at the Salon de l’Auto at the Grand Palais in December 1901, Renault presented a new model, which would only be sold for a year, the 6CV Type G; it was quite similar to the Type D from the previous year, but with a more modern appearance thanks to its identical wooden wheels at front and rear, and a new design for the bonnet. In addition, like all the cars in the range, for the first time it had a Renault badge with two intertwined ‘R’s.

Following their victories in the Paris-Bordeaux, Paris-Berlin and, later in 1902, Paris-Vienna races, the Renault brothers were well known and their cars, built in a factory employing 500 workers, sold well.

The Type G we are presenting entered the collection in September 1996, joining it from Vilvoorde. It was the subject of a high-quality restoration in the past and looks most attractive, with its beige bodywork set off by dark green edges, wheels and wings. At the back, a small door provides access to the bench seat, while under the bonnet is an 860cc single-cylinder De Dion engine, which has just been restarted by the crew of the Collection. The car does not have any registration papers. Once it has been completely overhauled and recommissioned, it will be ideally suited to outings on country roads at the gentle pace of the start of the last century. It could even be entered in the famous London to Brighton Veteran Car Run, held in November each year, which welcomes hundreds of cars built before 1 July 1905.
