- Elegant ‘coupé-chauffeur’ bodywork

- 12CV model, the mainstay of Renault’s range at the time

- Interesting basis for a restoration

From 1909, Renault’s range included a 12CV model, a midrange car between the small AX models and the larger 20CV, 35CV and even 50CV versions. This 12CV model with a side-valve four-cylinder engine was a constant in the years that followed and saw various mechanical improvements, coming through the war years to reappear in the 1920s. The 1922 JM had a lighter engine with a capacity of 2.8 litres and various improvements over its predecessor: it was lower and the bonnet was positioned further forward, with raised headlamps.

This example joined the collection in 1992, in its current condition. The engine is present, in front of the radiator, but some of its ancillary equipment is missing. The front compartment and controls are incomplete, but this car is interesting on account of its unusual ‘coupé-chauffeur’ body, which could have been be the work of Labourdette. This Renault Type JM, which is missing its front bench seat, was the subject of a good-quality older restoration of its woodwork and bodywork, which could be the starting point that leads to a handsome motorcar embodying the luxury of the 1920s.
