After presenting an ‘Elektro Clio’ at the 1992 Frankfurt Motor Show, Renault put a production version on sale in 1995. Developed in collaboration with Siemens, the Clio was fitted with an electric motor at the front and a set of batteries weighing nearly 300kg under the boot and rear seat. Its performance was limited, with a top speed of 95kph and a range of about 80km, which scarcely helped its sales; in addition, the model was more expensive than the petrol-engined Clio, despite the government subsidies. This situation explains why only 253 examples were built between 1995 and 2000.

The electric Clio offered for sale today is complete and was part of a fleet run by GEG (Gaz Electricité de Grenoble) before it returned to Renault after 15,000km and ten years’ service. It has since been used quite regularly and has the advantage that it can be recharged from a simple 220-volt socket thanks to its built-in charger.

Properly looked after from new, it will need to be serviced before being driven again, and its Webasto heating system is no longer working. It represents a rare and interesting witness to one of the first attempts at the large-scale production of an electric car derived from a petrol-engined model.
