Set up in Dieppe in 1979, Berex (the ‘Bureau d'Études et de Recherches Exploratoires’, or Exploratory Research Office) was known above all for its design proposals for Alpine or sports cars. But on occasion, this Renault subsidiary also worked on quite different projects, such as the Jeepsy presented here. Inspired by the Renault-engined Jeep II Concept presented by AMC in 1977, it is a scaled-down version of the traditional Jeep: shorter, lighter and therefore more economical.

It has composite bodywork and a longitudinally-mounted diesel engine from the Renault 9, with drive to all four wheels through a four-speed gearbox with an additional short ratio and a selectable differential lock. The front suspension is independent, and it is equipped with two front seats, a roll cage and a hood.

As a one-off prototype, this interesting little 4x4 cannot be registered for the road; it is complete and will need to be thoroughly overhauled before being driven again, but is an original and well-executed vehicle.
