The agreement it signed in 1979 with AMC made it easier for Renault to sell its cars in the United States: first the Renault 5 Le Car, and then the Alliance and Encore, the equivalent of the 9 and 11. To support this development, in 1982 Renault launched the Renault Cup, a single-make race series based on the 5 Le Car. When Renault-Jeep-Sport was created, the Renault Cup was extended to the Encore and Alliance, and in the wake of this, Renault set up the Renault Sports Formula in association with the Sports Car Club of America. This featured single-seat sports racers with a tubular chassis and a centrally-mounted engine and gearbox assembly from the Renault Encore.

This low-cost race series, with cars in the same configuration as true competition cars, offered the drivers a stepping stone into higher-level series such as the IMSA, Can-Am or Indy races. The series kicked off in June 1984 as a support race for the Formula 1 Detroit Grand Prix, and about 200 cars were built. This particular car, which underwent a high-quality restoration in the past, is one of them. It will need to be serviced before being driven again, but will not go unnoticed at track days.
