-« cette tenture jali a été faite pour Amanullah Khan, Blessings, le 1er dalwa 1338 [22 janvier 1960] par Golnar Begum Elahi Talighik »
The inclusion of the month of Dalw (corresponding to Aquarius in the zodiac) in the date embroidered on the hanging suggests the use of the Afghan solar (shamsi) calendar, yielding a date of January 1960, just a few months before Amanullah Khan’s death in April of that year. Alternatively, interpreting the date according to the Hijri calendar would yield 1919–20, the year in which Amanullah Khan was proclaimed Emir of Afghanistan.
This sumptuous hanging is undoubtedly associated with the reign of Amanullah Khan and constitutes a rare testament to Afghanistan’s monarchical period. It exemplifies the virtuosity, inventiveness and richness of Afghan textile art in the modern era.
