This folio comes from a dispersed copy of the Garshaspnama, of which two further folios are preserved at the National Museum of Asian Art, Washington (inv. nos. S1986.274 and S1986.275). These two folios formed part of the celebrated collection of Henri Vever (1851–1942). See also the catalogue entry for lot 186.
Stylistically, the folio bears similarities to a copy of the Garshaspnama transcribed in Shiraz in 981 AH / 1573–74, now held at the British Library, London (inv. Or. 12985).
The Garshaspnama is an epic poem recounting the adventures of Garshasp, one of the heroes of the Shahnama, the monumental work by the Persian poet Ferdowsi (d. 1025). It is the principal work of Asadi Tusi (d. 1073).
