The Mercedes G-Class (for “Gelandewagen”, off-road vehicle) has enjoyed impressive longevity as well as an incredible career evolution. It was launched in 1975 as a military version and was praised for its robustness, performance and reliability. As a result, it was no surprise that the civilian version was presented four years later at the Paul Ricard circuit.
This particular G-Class stands out from the crowd for two main reasons: its convertible bodywork and its extraordinary original condition. Having spent almost its entire existence in the Innsbruck region of Austria in the hands of the same family (first the mother and then her son in 2015), it has a much more attractive appearance than what would suggest its mileage of 105,000 km. The paintwork shines bright, the upholstery is barely patinated, the dashboard is immaculate, and the trim shows no flaws, which is a tribute to the quality of manufacturing and finish for this superb machine. Since new, it benefited from several options: Iridium Silver Metallic paint (775U), 5GTronic automatic transmission (GE9), Illuminated stainless steel door sills (a), CD changer (EP5), Comand navigation system (ET4), rear mud flaps (P48), tow bar (Q55), 18-inch alloy wheels (RM3) and extended leather upholstery (U46).
Servicing schedules carried out every two years on average show that the car was used very regularly, around 5,000 km per year since new as shown on the Mercedes service book. Fitted with a twin-turbo V8 engine, it’s worth noting that the G500 has more than 420 hp and can provide accelerations similar to a sports car. In its rare convertible bodywork and with its equipment, luxury, robustness and superb condition combined with a “vintage” touch, this example is one of the most desirable G-Class on the market.
