This exceptional Combi was originally a model 231, which was converted into the sought-after 23-window version. Bought by a fan, it was fully restored, fitted out and equipped between March and July 2021, with a view to numerous long road trips. A new 2020 cm3, 120hp Speed Shop engine was fitted, alongside a trumpet gearbox re-tuned by a specialist in the field. For safety, disc brakes were fitted, a bearing steering gear was mounted to reduce play and increase the turning radius, and Bilstein shock absorbers at the rear and adjustable Koni shock absorbers at the front were fitted. Inside, the cabin has been insulated and fitted out with all the comforts required for independent living, a list of which can be supplied on request. A dual electrical system has been installed, including a connection module for solar panels, with all lighting provided by LEDs. There is a double USB-A connection concealed in the ashtray, and we noted a 12-220w converter for connecting laptops. The upholstery was custom-made by a craftsman, with Bultex memory foam and leatherette and Alcantara trim. The front seats come from a Renault 5 Turbo, reworked to match the design. The van is also equipped with a Propex 2000W stationary heating system. But that’s not all, as this model comes with a trailer converted from another combi, of which only two are known to exist in the world (the others were made of fibreglass). This one has a plancha on sliding rails, a 2nd gas cylinder and all the camping equipment to free up cabin space. Since it was built, this T1, nicknamed “Charly”, has done 30,000 km without a hitch, and has appeared in the specialist press and various gatherings. Its owner, a demanding enthusiast, has just given it a completely new paint job. It goes without saying that long-distance travellers will be spellbound by this unique van, prepared with passion, knowledge and unlimited cost!
