The Mercedes 300 SL roadster is one of the most fascinating cars of the 1950s and 1960s. While the 300 SL “Gullwing” offered a spectacular appearance, it was less practical due to its enclosed interior which was hard to ventilate. Launched at the 1957 Geneva Motor Show, the roadster version struck the perfect balance between a high-level sporting pedigree and the refinement that enthusiasts could expect from a car with this price tag. Capable of exceeding 200 km/h, it was equally suited to long journeys as well as a visit to the opera with a passenger in evening dress, all in perfect safety thanks in particular to its new rear suspension. In a symbiosis of sport and luxury, it became a symbol of post-war revival.

This particular Mercedes 300 SL roadster stands out from all others thanks to its provenance and condition: the current owner is only its third and it has been preserved in stunning original condition.

It was sold new on the 14th December 1959 in Belgium, on behalf of the company “Elektrische Houtzagerij” based in Hove within the Antwerp region. The second owner resided in the upmarket seaside resort of Knokke-Heist, known for its beautiful sand beaches. The third and current owner is a Dutch collector who purchased it in March 2011 through Luc’s Car, a dealer from Bruges specialised in the brand with the star. At that time, the car had a mileage of 92,000 km and it also had a full service carried out. Since then, it has been kept at the owner’s property in St-Topez and has been regularly serviced by his mechanic.

Thanks to its unusual history, this Mercedes 300 SL roadster is presented in astonishing condition. The original bodywork was simply repainted at some point in its existence. Hubcaps and chrome are flawless and the interior is fully original, with rare blue leather extremely well preserved and exhibiting a desirable patina.

The dashboard is immaculate. With its renowned 3-litre 6-cylinder fuel-injected engine, this car’s handling is exceptionally smooth and it even behaves like a modern car, while not being distracted by unwanted play.

On the road, it is obvious the car was occasionally used and perfectly serviced, just like a low-mileage Mercedes should be. Furthermore, it will be delivered with its hard top which will enable its new owner to enjoy it like a coupe in winter. It also comes with its owner’s manual, as well as various documents and catalogues. This car represents what the Anglo-Saxons call a “time capsule”, as in original condition that no restoration could replicate. As a result, it will certainly attract the attention of the most sophisticated collectors.
