For Ferrari, the family of the 250 models marked the beginning of a new era, moving from a craft-based approach to a more industrial one. Built around the amazing Colombo V12 engine and launched in 1953, the 250 Europa was the start of a closer collaboration with Pinin Farina and a greater attention towards passenger comfort, interior layout and soundproofing. For the first time, the emergence of the letters “GT” (for Gran Turismo) in Ferrari’s nomenclature reflected the brand’s desire to reach a broader audience.

Due to the success of this new car, Ferrari and Pinin Farina decided to increase production, prompting the coachbuilder to build a new factory in Grugliasco. While waiting for it to become operational, the manufacturing of the 250 GT was entrusted to the Boano coachbuilder, founded in 1954 by Mario Boano who was previously at Ghia. The 250 GT Boano is therefore an important milestone in Ferrari’s history: while retaining the radically sporty character of previous Ferrari road cars, it paved the way for the Gran Turismo design, for which the brand would become the undisputed champion.

According to the manufacturer’s records, the chassis of this 250 GT (No 0543) left the Ferrari factory on 16 July 1956 and was sent to Boano for the bodywork. Painted grey with a beige interior, this car was the 56th example in the series. Once completed, it was delivered new to Autoval in Paris before being shipped to the United States, where it resurfaced in 1958 in the joint ownership of Chuck Sweeney of Santa Barbara in California and Bill Woodward of Hawaii. Remarkably, these two enthusiasts took part in major American motorsport events behind the wheel of this car, notably in Palm Springs and Santa Barbara in California, as well as Dillingham in Hawaii.

Following its racing career, this Ferrari No 0543 was sold to a Mr. Bentley from Vancouver in Canada, country where it has known several successive owners. In 2006, it was purchased by J.B. Durham of Dallas in Texas and at that time, a high-quality restoration was carried out during which it was repainted in a gorgeous black colour that it still sports to date. Mr. Durham subsequently presented it at the Meadow Brook Concours d’Elegance in Michigan and in 2007, it was sold to Kevin Cogan, a renowned collector from Louisville in Kentucky.

After spending about 50 years in North America, the car returned to Europe to a well-known Ferrari specialist. Acquired by a Belgian collector in 2013, a thorough overhaul was carried out from its old restoration: the bodywork at the Bacchelli & Villa workshops in Modena, the upholstery at Tappezzeria Luppi in Modena and the mechanics by Officina in Belgium, including the change of the odometer from miles to km/h. The total cost of the work exceeded €150,000, as evidenced by invoices included in the extensive file. To crown this restoration, the car was invited to take part in the 2016 Villa d’Este Concours d’Elegance. It was in 2017 that this Ferrari 250 GT Boano was purchased by its current owner, a Belgian collector with a passion for historic racing cars who also took part in the Mille Miglia several times. Since then, it was serviced regularly and remains in immaculate condition, with its magnificent black paint and high-quality red leather interior.

With its tool kit, the Ferrari Classiche certification and the FIVA passport included, this car is fitted with its original engine. Rarer than the subsequent classic 250 GT Pinin Farina Coupe, the Boano Coupe offers the charm of exclusivity and superbly combines the sporty spirit of early Ferrari cars with comfort that makes it more pleasant to drive. With its incredible racing history, this example is a particularly iconic representation of the model and is presented in outstanding condition.
