Interior Motives: Artcurial x Reflections

On September 30, 2026, Artcurial presents Interior Motives: Artcurial x Reflections, a themed auction exploring the intimate connection between art and design in our living spaces.

Curated by Matt Black, founder of Reflections, this project views artworks not as isolated objects, but as presences capable of shaping atmospheres, emotions, and lifestyles.

Paintings, sculptures, and design pieces and objects interact within imagined interiors, where collecting becomes an act of personal and cultural composition. The auction unfolds around three aesthetic worlds - Paris, Los Angeles, and Tokyo - each conceived as a lived-in interior, reflecting an aesthetic sensibility and a unique relationship between art and everyday life.

Each work contributes to a coherent narrative, where collecting becomes a language made up of memory, identity, and perspective. Artcurial invites you to take part in this unique project by consigning works by artists and designers whose practices embody this cross-disciplinary vision.

REFLECTIONS

REFLECTIONS, founded by Matt Black, is an international platform operating at the intersection of art, film, and contemporary culture, producing projects around the world that foster dialogue with today's most prominent artists and cultural figures.

Matt Black is an exhibition curator, artistic advisor, and filmmaker born in Paris and based in New York, whose work bridges exhibition making, publishing, and cinematic storytelling. REFLECTIONS first emerged as a successful film series for NOWNESS, featuring intimate portraits of artists such as Rashid Johnson, Jeff Koons, and Takashi Murakami. Artnet described the series as “a remarkable document on the state of the art world.”

The project grew into the book Reflections: In Conversation with Today’s Artists (Assouline), launched at the Whitney Museum of American Art and hailed by T Magazine as “a vivid portrait of contemporary art,” further strengthening the platform’s cultural resonance.

As an exhibition curator, Black has developed projects internationally, organizing solo and group presentations with artists such as George Condo, KAWS, Jose Parla, Sterling Ruby, Frank Stella, Katherine Bernhardt, Hilary Pecis, Jenna Gribbon, Pat Steir, and Julian Schnabel, among others.

His commercial collaborations in the field of fine arts extend to major cultural and luxury institutions, including Jeff Koons × Louis Vuitton, Andy Warhol × NARS, Stephen Sprouse × Louis Vuitton, the television series STUDIO(S), the Guggenheim × Hugo Boss Prize series, and the Tribeca Film Festival × CHANEL.

Parisian Universe

The Parisian universe is constructed like an educated interior where art history, 20th-century design, and contemporary creation coexist in a balance of rigor and sensitivity. Here, the interior becomes a cultural portrait, nourished by memory, materials, and complex forms. Modern and contemporary works interact with iconic design pieces and decorative arts, reflecting a conception of collecting as continuity, transmission, and reinterpretation.

Californian Universe

The Californian interior is an open, bright, and experimental space. In Los Angeles, art and design become gestures, identities, colors, and attitudes, reflecting a visual culture deeply connected to the body, the city, and personal narrative. This universe favors works with a strong visual and narrative presence, where painting, sculpture, and design interact with fluidity and spontaneity, embodying a free and contemporary vision of domestic space.

Tokyo Universe

The Tokyo universe revolves around a calm, restrained aesthetic that gives pride of place to materials. The interior becomes a space for contemplation, where each work is chosen for its ability to generate a presence in the void, through essential gestures or repetition. In this universe, art and design come together in a sensitive and meditative dimension, where collecting is akin to an exercise in attention, rhythm, and precision.
