For the first time in France: a rare Alexander Calder stabile for sale

Monumental and imposing, this stabile by Alexander Calder was installed in 1969 in La Colle-sur-Loup, in the Midi region of France. The piece was ordered as part of project to build a resort village for VVF (Village Vacances Familles); an artwork had to be installed at the resort according to the organisation's charter. Calder was chosen in light of his sculptures that were already decorating the entrance garden of the Fondation Maeght in Saint-Paul, which was inaugurated in 1964.

This piece is entirely characteristic of the artist’s style during that period. It is what is referred to as a “stabile” sculpture.

This stabile is made up of simple geometric shapes like trapezoids and triangles accompanied by concave edges and sharp angles that are cut freely out of thick metal plates and reinforced by ribs to ensure rigidity. The structure is very bold and rests firmly on its four support points. It belongs to the same family of work as Guillotine for Eight, a 1962 piece installed in the Musée d’Art Moderne at Villeneuve d’Ascq. Other Calder stabiles are installed in remarkable, highly visited spaces: this piece is to be counted among the artist's masterpieces.
