Née à Chtouka, près d’El Jadida au Maroc, Chaïbia Talal (1929-2004) est une figure emblématique de l’art moderne marocain. C’est à 25 ans que Chaïbia fait un rêve particulièrement marquant, où une voix l’invite à peindre. Elle commence à peindre sur des supports modestes, souvent avec les doigts. Sa peinture, instinctive et spontanée, se caractérise par ses couleurs vives, ses motifs uniques, ses formes simplifiées et sa forte expressivité. Chaïbia illustre avec sincérité la vie quotidienne et la culture populaire marocaine, en particulier le rôle et la force des femmes. À la fois spontanée et expressive, l’œuvre de Chaïbia est vite remarquée par le critique Pierre Gaudibert et les peintres Ahmed Cherkaoui et André Elbaz. En 1966, l’artiste est exposée pour la première fois au Goethe Institut à Casablanca. Encouragée par son fils, également peintre, sa renommée s’accroît et dépasse les frontières du Maroc. Chaïbia participe notamment au Salon des indépendants au Musée d’Art Moderne à Paris. Elle est exposée, lors de son vivant, aux côtés de Pablo Picasso, Pierre Alechinsky, Jean Hélion, Hans Arp et Claude Viallat. Présente dans les collections du Musée de l’Art Brut de Lausanne, du Fonds National d’Art Contemporain à Paris et du Musée Mataf à Doha, son œuvre a été exposée à l’international, notamment à l’Institut du monde arabe à Paris et aux Biennales de Rabat et La Havane.

Born in Chtouka, near El Jadida in Morocco, Chaïbia Talal (1929-2004) is an iconic figure in modern Moroccan art. At the age of 25, Chaïbia had a particularly vivid dream in which a voice invited her to paint. She began painting on modest surfaces, often using her fingers. Her painting, instinctive and spontaneous, is characterized by bright colors, unique patterns, simplified forms, and strong expressiveness. Chaïbia illustrates everyday life and popular culture in Morocco, particularly the role and strength of women. Both spontaneous and expressive, Chaïbia’s work was quickly noticed by critic Pierre Gaudibert and painters Ahmed Cherkaoui and André Elbaz. In 1966, Chaïbia exhibited for the first time at the Goethe Institut in Casablanca. Encouraged by her son, also a painter, her reputation grew beyond the borders of Morocco. Chaïbia participated in the Salon des Indépendants at the Musée d’Art Moderne in Paris. During her lifetime, her work was exhibited alongside that of Pablo Picasso, Pierre Alechinsky, Jean Hélion, Hans Arp, and Claude Viallat. Featured in the collections of the Musée de l’Art Brut in Lausanne, the Fonds National d’Art Contemporain in Paris, and the Mataf Museum in Doha, his work has been exhibited internationally, notably at the Institut du monde arabe in Paris and the Rabat and Havana.
