Knokke-le-Zoute, Casino, Keith Haring, juin-août 1987

En 1987, Roger Nellens invite l’artiste américain Keith Haring à exposer au Casino de Knokke-le-Zoute, en Belgique. Haring, déjà célèbre en Europe, réalise sur place toutes les œuvres de l’exposition entre mars et juin 1987. Il peint également une fresque sur un conteneur du Channel Surf Club et décore l’intérieur du « Dragon », une maison-sculpture créée par Niki de Saint Phalle et Jean Tinguely.

L’exposition a lieu du 29 juin au 30 août 1987. L’œuvre Sans titre, créée spécialement pour cette occasion, illustre parfaitement le style de Haring : couleurs primaires, formes organiques, personnages mécanisés, robots et symboles inspirés des pictogrammes, de la bande dessinée et du street art. L’artiste y exprime notamment ses réflexions sur la technologie et son influence sur l’être humain.

Cette œuvre témoigne aussi de l’influence de plusieurs grands artistes européens, notamment Piet Mondrian, Salvador Dalí et Pierre Alechinsky, dont le style dynamique et proche de l’art CoBrA résonne particulièrement dans cette création.

Réalisée à une période marquée par la crise du sida, Sans titre représente une œuvre majeure de la fin de la carrière de Keith Haring. Elle montre son désir de rendre l’art accessible à tous et de créer un langage visuel universel, tout en affirmant l’évolution et la richesse de son style.

In 1987, Roger Nellens invited the American artist Keith Haring to exhibit at the Casino of Knokke-le-Zoute, Belgium. Already well known in Europe, Haring created all the works for the exhibition on site between March and June 1987. He also painted a mural on a container belonging to the Channel Surf Club and decorated the interior of the “Dragon,” a sculptural house created by Niki de Saint Phalle and Jean Tinguely.

The exhibition took place from June 29 to August 30, 1987. The work Untitled, created specifically for the occasion, perfectly illustrates Haring’s distinctive style: primary colors, organic forms, mechanized figures, robots, and symbols inspired by pictograms, comic books, and street art. In this work, the artist explores, among other themes, his reflections on technology and its influence on human beings.

The work also reflects the influence of several major European artists, notably Piet Mondrian, Salvador Dalí, and Pierre Alechinsky, whose dynamic style and affinity with the CoBrA movement resonate particularly strongly in this creation.

Created during a period marked by the AIDS crisis, Untitled stands as a major work from the later part of Keith Haring’s career. It reflects his desire to make art accessible to everyone and to create a universal visual language, while asserting the evolution and richness of his artistic style.
