En 1943, Augustin Lesage a 67 ans et peint en pleine Occupation. Ancien mineur du Pas-de-Calais devenu peintre après avoir entendu, dans les galeries de la mine, une voix lui annonçant qu'il serait un jour artiste, il poursuit depuis le début des années 1910 une œuvre picturale guidée, selon lui, par des esprits et notamment celui de sa sœur défunte.

Véritable temple pictural, cette huile sur toile d’Augustin Lesage de 1943 déploie l’un des univers les plus fascinants de l’artiste. Aucun croquis préparatoire ni plan d'ensemble, Lesage commence en haut de la toile et « descend » progressivement, peignant par petites touches et par niveaux horizontaux, appliquant chaque couleur d'un seul tenant sur toute la largeur avant de passer à la suivante. Le résultat est une composition dense et symétrique où les références à l’Égypte antique sont omniprésentes : profils royaux, figures hiératiques, lions gardiens, personnages et attributs inspirés de l’iconographie pharaonique se mêlent à une multitude de motifs géométriques et floraux.

In 1943, Augustin Lesage was 67 years old and painting in the midst of the German Occupation. A former miner from the Pas-de-Calais region who turned to painting after hearing a voice in the mine galleries telling him that he would one day become an artist, he had, since the early 1910s, pursued a pictorial practice guided, as he believed, by spirits, most notably that of his deceased sister. A true pictorial temple, this 1943 oil on canvas by Augustin Lesage unfolds one of the artist’s most fascinating visions. Across the entire surface, the artist constructs an imaginary architecture of extraordinary precision, organized along an axis of symmetry around which figures, animals, medallions and ornamental motifs are arranged. Working without preparatory sketches or an overall plan, Lesage begins at the top of the canvas and gradually “descends”, painting in small touches and horizontal layers, applying each colour continuously across the full width before moving on to the next.
