Ishmael Armah est un artiste émergent ghanéen, né en 1986 à Accra où il continue de vivre et travailler. Il a étudié au Ghanatta College of Art & Design de 2017 à 2019, où il s’est intéressé au Design Graphique et à la peinture.  Junior Fellow de la Noldor Residency en 2023, l’artiste a également tenu une exposition individuelle au Chilli Art Projects à Londres en 2022.  

Le travail d'Ishmael Armah porte sur le dialogue constant entre le regard occidental et l'identité africaine hétérogène. Le peintre exprime ce dialogue avec des références au textile traditionnel ghanéen et aux formes contemporaines de la mode. Ces motifs sont notamment incorporés dans sa pratique par une utilisation distinctive de couleurs vives et de coups de pinceau pointillistes. Ainsi, son art célèbre le riche héritage culturel de son pays entre tradition et modernité.

Ishmael Armah is an emerging Ghanaian artist, born in 1986 in Accra where he continues to live and work. He studied at Ghanatta College of Art & Design from 2017 to 2019, where he focused on Graphic Design and painting. A Junior Fellow at the Noldor Residency in 2023, the artist also held a solo exhibition at Chilli Art Projects in London in 2022. 

Ishmael Armah's work focuses on the constant dialogue between the Western gaze and heterogeneous African identity. The painter expresses this dialogue with references to traditional Ghanaian textiles and contemporary forms of fashion. These motifs are notably incorporated into his practice through a distinctive use of bright colors and pointillist brushstrokes. In this way, the art of Armah celebrates the rich cultural heritage of his country between tradition and modernity.
