First registered on 20 May 1953, this Mercedes 220 Cabriolet impresses with the quality of its restoration, carried out by specialists in the marque and with no expense spared. The off-white bodywork is superb, set off by faultless chromework. Inside, the olive-green upholstery is utterly beautiful, with leather covering the seats, door cards and even the dashboard. The carpets are of the same high quality, as is the varnished wood trim on the top of the dashboard and doors. All the details which make the finish of this kind of car so charming are impeccable, down to the ivory-coloured steering wheel, Blaupunkt radio and the ashtray above it. The beautifully cared-for engine compartment houses the overhead-valve 2.2-litre six-cylinder. In this instance, the engine is a replacement unit supplied by the manufacturer, as is confirmed by its ‘Original Mercedes-Benz Tauschaggregat’ plate. It was completely rebuilt in 2008, as can be seen from a file of photographs. Over the past 20 years, when the car had the same owner in Kalchreuth, near Nuremberg, some 90,000 euros were spent to restore and maintain it, and in 2007 it was given the rating 2++ by Classic Data (1 being the highest). It comes with a binder containing bills and historical documents.
This Mercedes 220 is one of the 1278 Cabriolet A models built from 1951-55, which were more elegant than the B versions, thanks to their streamlined tail. This classic model in Mercedes’ history, the first six-cylinder model in its post-war range, exhibits the luxurious finish characteristic of the marque, shown to its best advantage in this impeccable example.
