The legend of Phra Malai was particularly popular in central Thailand during the nineteenth century. It recounts how the monk Phra Malai, through the merit he had accumulated and the power of meditation, was permitted, after numerous tribulations, to travel to the Tāvatiṃsa heaven (San San May and Jana Igunma, Buddhism Illuminated: Manuscript Art in Southeast Asia, British Library, 2018, pp. 90–91).
A nineteenth-century manuscript of the legend of Phra Malai is held at the British Library, London (Or. 15257). It contains an illustration of hell that closely resembles the one in the present manuscript (op. cit., fig. 5.17, pp. 186–87).
