Comment:

The coronation of Rama (Rama Pattabhisheka) brings the great epic Ramayana to a close. Following his victory over the demon Ravana and fourteen years of exile, Rama returns to Ayodhya with Sita and ascends the throne, ushering in the ideal reign known as Rama Rajya. Considered an especially auspicious scene, it frequently adorns door lintels in the grand residences of southern India, particularly in the Chettinad region of Tamil Nadu. A door lintel depicting the same subject, attributed to Chettinad and dated c. 1850–1920, is held at the Asian Art Museum, San Francisco (inv. no. B76S4).
