Comment:

This dish belonged to Albert Vieillard (1841–1895), who, together with his brother Charles (1842–1893), directed the J. Vieillard & Cie manufactory, one of Bordeaux’s leading faience producers, until its closure in 1895. During the 1870s and 1880s, under the guidance of its artistic director, Amédée de Caranza, the manufactory developed an extensive Orientalist repertoire, drawing inspiration from both Japanese art and the arts of the Islamic world (see two pieces in the Musée d’Orsay, Paris, inv. nos. OAO 1357 and OAO 1358). Ceramics such as this dish from Multan, brought back or collected by the Vieillard family, may have provided inspiration for the manufactory’s decorators.
