A noteworthy feature is the presence beneath the base of a paper bearing the signature of Johann Michael Munck (1700–1762). Based in Augsburg, Munck was among the most celebrated producers of gilded and embossed papers, known as ‘brocade papers’ (Brokatpapier), which were highly prized in the eighteenth century for bookbinding and interior decoration.

European papers had been imported into the Ottoman world since the fourteenth century. Fine and of high quality, they can often be identified by their commercial watermarks. They were used for imperial firmans, literary manuscripts and decorative arts, and also to line caskets and writing boxes. The paper thus provides a valuable clue to the dating of the present writing box.
