Estimate:
€5,000 - 8,000

Description

A Roman marble palette with female figure,
2nd-3rd century A.D.

Restauration.

Dim.: 17,3 x 12,6 cm

Provenance:

Collection Charles Gillet (1879 – 1972), puis par descendance

Comment:

This type of palette, which is very rare, can be compared, from a typological perspective, with representations and models of cradles featuring similarly shaped cut-out ends (Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, inv. no. 96.671, and Musée du Louvre, inv. no. MNC 24). The upper section, meanwhile, may suggest an allusion to the birth of Venus in a shell, here associated with the form of a cradle.
