Under the Marinids (c. 1244–1465), the walls of madrasas, residences and funduqs throughout Morocco were adorned with mosaics, stucco and large carved wooden panels, reflecting a tradition closely related to that of neighbouring al-Andalus. In the courtyards of the Bu ʿInaniya and al-ʿAttarin madrasas in Fez, two major Marinid foundations, long inscribed wooden lintels run above the arcades. Another Marinid lintel, decorated with the same striated leaves, was offered for sale at Christie’s, London, Islamic Art and Manuscripts, 29 April 2003, lot 51.
