Comment:

This type of caste and occupational paintings from India was particularly popular in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, aimed at a European clientele based in India. The pictorial style is that of southern India, in particular the Tanjore school. An exceptional album of 52 paintings in an identical style, commissioned by a British colonial administrator in the late eighteenth century, was sold at Sotheby’s, London, on 29 October 2025, lot 232. Another group of 14 paintings very close to the present example, dated to around 1800, is in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (inv. AL.8940A-N). Another painting from a similar series was sold at Artcurial, Paris, 4 November 2014, lot 261.
