Comment:

The composition of this tile, with its Chinese tchi clouds framed by saz leaves, appears to have been created for the decoration of the Topkapı Palace, in connection with the restoration begun around 1574: see a tile dated to about 1578 and preserved in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (inv. no. 02.5.91). However, the less refined execution of the present tile would suggest a seventeenth-century date, demonstrating the popularity of this composition within the repertoire of Iznik ceramics in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. See three identical tiles offered at the Hôtel Drouot, Ader Nordmann, 25 November 2021, lot 234.
