Joana Choumali développe un procédé singulier de broderies incorporées à des photographies. Elle débute sa carrière de photographe après avoir étudié les arts graphiques à Casablanca et avoir travaillé dans une agence de publicité.

Dans la série « Ça va aller », des clichés pris avec un iPhone à Bassam, près d’Abidjan, dans les semaines qui suivent l’attaque terroriste de l’hôtel de Grand-Bassam du 13 mars 2016, Joana Choumali saisit la mélancolie de la ville meurtrie en photographiant des rues vides et des figures solitaires. Elle combine ces images en format carré 24 x 24 cm avec des motifs brodés qui ajoutent la couleur qui s’est pour un temps échappée de la ville, fusionnant intimité rétrospective et résilience empreinte d’espoir. Cette série lui a valu le Prix Pictet 2019, faisant d’elle la première lauréate africaine de ce prestigieux prix international de photographie.

Joana Choumali has developed a distinctive approach that integrates embroidery into her photographic work. She began her career as a photographer after studying graphic arts in Casablanca and working in an advertising agency.

In the series Ça va aller (It'll Be Alright), created in Bassam near Abidjan in the weeks following the terrorist attack on the Grand-Bassam hotel on 13 March 2016, Choumali captures the melancholy of a wounded city through images of empty streets and solitary figures taken with an iPhone. She overlays these 24 x 24 cm square photographs with embroidered motifs, restoring the colour that had temporarily vanished from the city and blending a sense of intimate retrospection with resilience and hope. This powerful series earned her the 2019 Prix Pictet, making her the first African artist to receive this prestigious international photography award.
