En 2005, la première série de Liu Bolin « Hide in the city » présente un autoportrait de l’artiste immobile et couvert de peinture, se fondant à son atelier, situé dans le quartier des artistes rasé par le gouvernement chinois. Une mobilisation silencieuse : Liu Bolin se rend invisible pour se faire remarquer. Depuis, il crée des œuvres mêlant photographie, body art, art optique et sculpture vivante. Cet homme-caméléon pose pendant des heures pour se fondre au paysage avec l’aide de ses assistants-peintres, sans aucun effet numérique. À la fin du processus, il arrête la performance par la photographie.

In 2005, Liu Bolin’ first series “Hide in the city” presents a self-portrait of the artist immobile and covered with paint, blending in with a black decor, his studio, located in the district of artists razed by the Chinese government. A silent protest: Liu Bolin makes himself invisible to get noticed. Since then, he has created works combining photography, body art, optical art and living sculpture. This man-chameleon poses for hours in front the backdrop of his choice to blend in with the scenery with the help of his painters-assistants, without any digital effects. At the end of the process, he stops the performance through photography.
