Né à Cotonou (Bénin), Dominique Zinkpè explore dans ses peintures et ses sculptures les dynamiques humaines, la modernité, le sacré et les tensions sociales à travers des figures hybrides, vibrantes et expressives. L’artiste mêle traditions béninoises et modernité pour créer un univers où gestes et symboles dialoguent, offrant une lecture contemporaine de récits et de mythes fondateurs. Ses sculptures architecturales en bois, composées de figurines Ibeji répétées (Ibeji signifiant « jumeaux » ou « né doublement »), proposent une vision singulière — à la fois mystique et contemporaine — de la lignée ancestrale.

La sculpture présentée, un assemblage imposant et asymétrique de statuettes Ibeji, déploie un volume enveloppant dont les courbes évoquent un être venu d’ailleurs, en métamorphose. Œuvre de grand format, véritable architecture sculptée, ce totem matérialise le dualisme et l’interconnexion entre l’individu et la société à travers cette « forêt » de personnages. Dominique Zinkpè confère à ses œuvres une forte dimension spirituelle, considérant sa pratique artistique comme un sacerdoce. Il perpétue ainsi les traditions animistes vaudou et la culture yoruba, qu’il réactive dans une création contemporaine.

Born in Cotonou, Benin, Dominique Zinkpè explores human dynamics, modernity, the sacred, and social tensions in his paintings and sculptures through vibrant, expressive hybrid figures. Blending Beninese traditions with contemporary approaches, he creates a universe where gestures and symbols interact, offering a modern reinterpretation of foundational narratives and myths. His architectural wooden sculptures, composed of repeated Ibeji figurines (Ibeji meaning “twins” or “born twice”), present a singular vision—both mystical and contemporary—of ancestral lineage.

The sculpture on display, an imposing and asymmetrical assemblage of Ibeji statuettes, unfolds into an enveloping form whose curves suggest beings from another world in metamorphosis. This large-scale work, a veritable sculptural architecture, embodies the dualism and interconnection between the individual and society through a dense “forest” of figures. Zinkpè imbues his creations with profound spiritual significance, viewing his artistic practice as a vocation. In doing so, he perpetuates animist Voodoo traditions and Yoruba culture, reviving them within a contemporary creative framework.
