Né en 1988 à Kinshasa, dans une famille d’artistes, Amani Bodo travaille sur la question du rapport de l’Afrique au reste du monde. Ses toiles représentent une planète malade et à la dérive, non sans humanité et un humour souvent acerbe. Amani Bodo y exprime ses rêves, espoirs, inquiétudes et déceptions, en prenant le temps d’une réflexion profonde sur un monde de plus en plus rapide.

L’artiste congolais a développé une technique unique qu’il appelle le « mwangisa », (terme lingala signifiant « aspergé ») : le fond de ses toiles sont recouverts de gouttelettes colorées qui font émerger un cadre spectaculaire et mystérieux. Tirant inspiration des affiches bollywoodiennes et de leur caractère publicitaire, l’œuvre de Bodo est caractérisée par des mises-en scène théâtrales.

Cette huile sur toile est une véritable ode au surréalisme, citant les icônes de ce mouvement dans une composition où les éléments co-existent sur un fond abstrait en « mwangisa ». Les figures reprises de peintures surréalistes sont toutes représentées comme des personnes noires, Bodo honore le mouvement surréaliste tout en proposant une réinterprétation de ses chef d’œuvres.

Exposé notamment à Paris, Milan, Londres, Marrakech et Bruxelles, Bodo vit et travaille aujourd’hui à Kinshasa.

Born in 1988 in Kinshasa into a family of artists, Amani Bodo explores Africa’s relationship with the rest of the world through his art. His paintings depict a planet in crisis, adrift, ailing, yet still marked by humanity and often laced with biting humor. With each work, Bodo shares his dreams, hopes, fears, and disappointments, offering a thoughtful meditation on a world moving at a growing speed.

The Congolese artist has developed a signature technique he calls mwangisa - a Lingala word meaning “to sprinkle.” This method involves covering the canvas with colorful droplets that create a striking, almost ethereal backdrop. Drawing inspiration from the theatricality of Bollywood film posters, Bodo’s work is marked by elaborate staging and a visually powerful aesthetic.

This oil painting is a true homage to Surrealism, referencing iconic figures from the movement and placing them in an abstract mwangisa background. In Bodo’s reimagining, all these figures are portrayed as black individuals, offering both a tribute and a critical reinterpretation of surrealist masterpieces through an African lens.

Bodo has exhibited in Paris, Milan, London, Marrakech, and Brussels, and continues to live and work in Kinshasa.
