L’œuvre photographique I Will Go To Paradise, Self-Portrait, Hyères 2008 narre en quatre temps la disparition progressive de l’artiste dans l’horizon marin, minuscule silhouette en djellaba qui s’enfonce jusqu’à se fondre dans les flots aux reflets crépusculaires. L’atmosphère chromatique irrationnelle dans laquelle sont plongés les différents panneaux – selon une technique de colorisation à la main – leur confère une dimension pleine d’onirisme.

Depuis qu’il a choisi de quitter définitivement son pays natal en 2003, le photographe égyptien Youssef Nabil se met en scène selon une démarche introspective dans des paysages solitaires. Ainsi intimement liés à l’expérience de l’exil, ses autoportraits le représentent le plus souvent de dos, vêtu de l’habit arabe traditionnel, faisant face tel un promeneur solitaire à l’horizon, qui ici l’engloutit.

The photographic work I Will Go To Paradise, Self-Portrait, Hyères 2008 tells the story of the artist's gradual disappearance into the marine horizon in four stages, as a tiny figure in a djellaba sinks into the twilight waters. The irrational chromatic atmosphere in which the various panels are immersed - using a hand-coloring technique - lends them a dreamlike dimension.

Since deciding to leave his native country for good in 2003, Egyptian photographer Youssef Nabil has taken an introspective approach to staging himself in solitary landscapes. Closely linked to the experience of exile, his self-portraits most often depict him from behind, dressed in traditional Arab garb, facing the horizon like a solitary stroller, which here engulfs him.
