Né en 1936 à Soloba au Mali, Malick Sidibé rejoint en 1952 l’École des Artisans soudanais de Bamako après avoir été remarqué pour ses talents de dessinateur. Ici, le photographe Gérard Guillard l’initie à la photographie et au tirage argentique, puis lui confie des travaux de reportage. À son compte depuis 1957, Malick Sidibé parcourt Bamako sur sa bicyclette, de fêtes en bals de fin d’année. Jusqu’à la fin des années 70, il immortalise le Bamako des années post-indépendance et l’effervescente jeunesse malienne, marquée par l’arrivée de la musique américaine, la mode des années « yéyé » et une grande soif de liberté attisée par des couvre-feux et des règles sévères imposées par le régime en place. Le studio de Sidibé, situé dans le quartier de Bagadadji, attire les foules, lui valant le surnom « l’œil de Bamako ». Les soirs de week-end les jeunes font la queue devant son studio pour se faire tirer le portrait dans leurs plus beaux habits, lunettes de soleil et « patte d’eph ».

L’œuvre de Sidibé a été exposée à travers le monde et fait partie des collections du Centre Pompidou à Paris ainsi que du MoMA et du Metropolitan Museum of Art à New York. Il est le premier artiste africain à recevoir le Prix Hasselblad en 2003 et le Lion d’Or de Venise en 2007.

Born in 1936 in Soloba, Mali, Malick Sidibé began his artistic journey in 1952 at the School of Sudanese Craftsmen in Bamako, where his talent for drawing quickly stood out. It was there that photographer Gérard Guillard introduced him to photography and silver gelatin printing, eventually entrusting him with documentary assignments. By 1957, Sidibé had established his own studio and became a fixture in Bamako, cycling from one party to the next, capturing the spirit of a post-independence Mali.

From the late 1950s through the 1970s, Sidibé documented the vibrant energy of Malian youth who were influenced by American music, the French “yéyé” fashion scene, and a strong yearning for freedom amid strict government-imposed curfews. His studio located in the Bagadadji neighborhood became a social hub where young people lined up on weekends to be photographed in their finest outfits, sunglasses, and bell-bottoms. His dynamic, joy-filled portraits earned him the nickname “the Eye of Bamako.”

Sidibé’s work has been exhibited globally and is held in the collections of the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the MoMA, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. He was the first African artist to receive the prestigious Hasselblad Award in 2003 and was awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Biennale in 2007.
