Lucius Durham Battle (1918–2008), an American diplomat, began his career in the Navy during the Second World War. After the end of the global conflict, he joined the U.S. Foreign Service and later served as First Secretary at the American Embassy in Copenhagen from 1953 to 1955. He went on to become Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs from 1962 to 1964. That same year, he was appointed U.S. Ambassador to Egypt, a position he held until 1967. He then continued his career in the private sector until 1980, when he founded the Foreign Policy Institute at the School of Advanced International Studies of Johns Hopkins University. He concluded his career as President of the Middle East Institute, serving from 1986 until his retirement in 1990.
