Cette oeuvre a été offerte par Fernand Léger à l'architecte Ernest Weissmann. Résidant à New York durant la seconde guerre mondiale, les deux hommes se rencontrèrent à l'occasion d'une série de conventions organisées par le Congrès d'architecture moderne (CIAM). La composition de ce dessin est très proche de deux peintures de 1941.
Une attestation écrite d'Ernest Weissmann accompagne cette oeuvre, dont voici le texte :
"This is an authentic drawing by Fernand Leger, who gave it to me at the time we worked on several murals in private homes of New York's affluent society. The method we used was for me to take a photograph (in color) of a tiny sketch by F.L. and projecting the slide on the wall where the mural was to be painted. After settling on the location, position, size etc., F.L. painted on the basis of key reference points set with the help of the projection. It was very interesting, creative work and a good use of "new technology" (slide/colour) in painting."
