On 19th June, Artcurial will hold the Jean-Jacques Sempé, auction. This sale, comprising 54 lots, pays tribute to the career of the illustrious cartoonist. The earliest drawings to be presented date from the early 1960s.

It features his humorous drawings depicting everyday scenes: a bike ride, an outing to the Opera or a night bus crossing a Parisian bridge. We dive into the world of the artist through a visit to his favourite Parisian places such as the Jardin du Luxembourg or the Place Saint-Sulpice.

Sempé's international career is also reflected in his cover drawings for the American cultural magazine The New Yorker. Sempé has been one of the most frequently commissioned artists for this magazine, with a hundred covers to his name and a collaboration since 1978. He also drew for Punch and Sports Illustrated, one of the most important American weekly sports magazines.

Born in Bordeaux in 1932, Jean-Jacques Sempé was a precocious cartoonist who published his first drawings in the local and then national press in the 1950s. In 1954, Sempé had a decisive encounter with René Goscinny. A collaboration ensued which led to the creation at the end of the 1950s of the adventures of a mischievous little boy named Nicolas. His first collection of cartoons was published in 1962. His characteristic blend of humour and poetry made him a popular cartoonist in the French and foreign press. A renowned French artist, the Paris City Council will pay tribute to him by inaugurating a mural in the 3rd arrondissement in 2019 and by using the same drawing for its 2020 greetings.

« Appearing on the art market for the first time will be an exceptional ensemble of drawings by this poetic genius, full of humour. An occasion not to be missed! »
