Ryan McGinley (born 1977)
Tree #3, 2003
Estimate: €20,000 - 25,000

This year, Artcurial is undergoing a Street Art-inspired transformation and diving back into the world of the Do It Yourself alternative movement that began in the 90s, and the 2004 travelling exhibition Beautiful Losers. That exhibition opened in Cincinnati, Ohio before travelling the globe, launching the artists from the movement onto the scene. The Outsider(s): a History of Beautiful Losers exhibition and sale will be held at Rond-point des Champs-Élysées, from 17 to 22 October 2019.

The collection, which includes more than 200 lots, comes from the United States and features original works, editions and rare objects by artists belonging to the movement. At times expressing a simple desire to take something back, at others a political statement opposing an ultra-consumerist world, this movement has spread far and wide since it first emerged, and continues to influence the entire urban art scene today. This “everyday art”, a product of critical thought on our society, forged a form of expression using a variety of media, including videos, photographs, graffiti, drawings and installations. With its specially designed staging, Artcurial is set to recreate that creative playground inhabited by a crew of young, marginalised artists, most of whom would draw their references from their lifestyles: punk-rock, hip-hop and skateboarding.

Phil Frost (born 1973)
Bolsar 7, 2003
Estimate: €30,000 - 40,000

Fans and collectors will have the opportunity to acquire pieces by leading names from the urban scene, like Mark Gonzales, Shepard Fairey, Margaret Kilgallen and Kaws, whose 2003 acrylic on photograph Untitled, depicting one of his famous Companions in a car bearing the Louis Vuitton stamp, estimated between €50,000 and €80,000 is one of the star pieces of the collection, along with a skateboard titled Warm Regards. Raymond Pettibon, an American artist and icon of the movement, is also represented, with Untitled (Blue Ball), a work on paper dated 2003, with an estimated value of between €10,000 and 15,000. Tribute is also paid to Phil Frost with a diptych titled Bolsar 7, created in 2003 and Subtext, which was produced in 1999 in collaboration with Barry McGee.

According to Arnaud Oliveux, auctioneer and Director of the Urban Art department at Artcurial, “ a landmark in the approach of counter-cultures in the United States ”. Mirroring this stream of popular references, from cartoons to television series, comics, super heroes, punk-rock and skateboarding, the staging for this event will transport its audience back to the heart of the Beat Generation scene.
