What is the idea behind the exhibition?

Vinciane de Traux: This autumn, African Contemporary is being given pride of place in Belgium with a local exhibition of a selection of artworks from our Paris-Marrakesh auction. We are extremely pleased to announce that the artist Sophie Cauvin is welcoming us into her magnificent studio, designed by the architect Marc Corbiau and surrounded by nature. The sober and bright space is the ideal venue to exhibit these works, so colourful and rich in meaning. The paintings and sculptures fit perfectly alongside Sophie’s work which is ‘sincere and without pretension, human-sized’ and takes its inspiration from materials and sands coming from all over the world.

Billie Zangewa (née en 1973)
Exquisite Fantasy, 2014
Estimation: 15 000 - 20 000 €

How were the artworks selected and why these choices?

VdT : Aude de Vaucresson (specialist in contemporary African art) and I submitted a list of artworks to Sophie Cauvin who then made her choice of those pieces which she felt ‘fit’ best into her world. We are looking forward to receiving visitors on Friday 30th November in this unique venue.

Tell us about one of the works you have chosen. A whim? A find?

VdT : Exquisite Fantasy by Billie ZANGEWA (born in 1973) is a real favourite of mine. This patchwork comes to life with the consistency of its story and the richness of the shimmering silk, the artist’s medium of choice. Billie Zangewa’s work is feminine, autobiographical and committed. Full of everyday heroes, her work addresses the universal themes which connect us all, one to another.

I’d also like to mention the work of Malian photographer Seydou Keïta, as I have always loved his iconic Odalisque, in her floral boubou. The theme too is impressive, as it is in the style of a painting and is a direct reference to the archetypical odalisque of the XIXth century.
