A Journey Through the 20th Century: The Unique Eye of a Belgian Collector

To celebrate the centenary of Art Deco, Artcurial is presenting an exclusive exhibition at the Villa Vandevelde, an architectural gem in Uccle designed by Adrien Blomme. From May 14th to 16th 2025, this private residence will unveil its owner's collection of 20th-century art – from James Ensor to Chu Teh-Chun – before its auction in Paris on June 5th. This collection will be sold in two auctions in Paris: Modern & Contemporary on June 5th, and Art Deco in November 2025.

This private collection is the result of a discerning acquisition process led by its owner. Deeply rooted in the art of her time, particularly of the 20th century, this collection reflects her personal tastes. Particular attention was given to Belgian artists such as James Ensor, Léon Spilliaert, Fernand Khnopff, and Pol Bury, alongside Italian figures like Alberto Magnelli, Piero Dorazio, and Tancredi Parmeggiani. The collector had an obvious sensitivity to aesthetics and architecture, and her passion is reflected in every piece in this unique and eclectic collection.

The collection establishes a refined dialogue between the great names of modern art - with major works such as Fernand Léger's Étude pour Les Plongeurs (1942), Ossip Zadkine’s Draped figure (1929) and James Ensor's Flowers and statuette (1938) - and key figures in contemporary art, such as Chu Teh-Chun's The night comes (1988), Piero Dorazio's Profil III (1973) and Philippe Hiquily's sculpture Cheng San (2006).

Several emblematic pieces from the Art Deco & Design period will complete this exceptional collection, including the ‘Nicolle’ games table by Jacques-Émile Ruhlmann, a dining table by Maison Dominique, as well as floor lamps by Fontana Arte and Félix Agostini.

Artcurial will auction around one hundred works from this collection, as well as Art Deco furniture, design pieces and silverware. The collection will be sold at two dedicated sales in Paris: the Modern & Contemporary auction on 5 June, followed by the Art Deco/Design auction in November 2025.

Located in Uccle, Villa Vandevelde is an elegant residence built in 1936 by architects Adrien and Yvan Blomme, father and son, for Maurice Vandevelde, then director of Chantiers Houillers. It is one of the last projects by Adrien Blomme, also known for such landmark buildings as the Cinéma Métropole, the Maison Blomme and the Hôtel Wielemans.

Designed during the architect’s Modernist period, the villa embodies a subtle harmony between Modernism and Art Deco. Its main quality lies in its integration with the surrounding landscape, made possible by the horizontality of its facades and the contrast between the white rendering and the black frames.

Purchased by the French government in 1973, it was for a long time occupied by the French ambassador to NATO who, with his wife, restored the interior in the 1990s in the pure Art Deco style. The house was listed as a historic monument in May 2006.
