1968 Mercedes-Benz 280 SL automatic with hardtop
As its body plate indicates, this ‘Pagoda’ was built for the Italian market. It was delivered new in 1968, with dark green paintwork (ref. 268H) and fitted with the desirable optional power steering, together with a four-speed automatic transmission with a floor change. It had already been registered in Germany since 1993 when Guido Hommel bought it in 2014. The body has been completely and carefully restored from the chassis up, the doors, boot and bonnet are well aligned, and the paintwork is of good quality. All the body seals have been replaced and the chromework is in excellent condition. The car has a magnificent patinated brown interior, which goes wonderfully with the colour of the paintwork. Also worthy of note are the practical, sideways-facing third seat in the rear and the seat belts in the front. The engine was entrusted to a former Mercedes mechanic to be overhauled and any worn parts were replaced as needed when it was rebuilt. The car comes, as it should, with its hardtop, and the dashboard is graced by a Becker Monza radio/cassette player. This lovely 280 SL was appraised in March 2024 and is ready to take to the road. Its combination of colours and power steering are sure to appeal to enthusiasts who appreciate elegance and ease of use.
