The Borgward Isabella went on sale in 1954, and coupé and cabriolet models were added from 1957. The coupé had modern, American-influenced styling and its 1500cc 75bhp engine gave it good performance; its equipment was deliberately luxurious, to appeal to well-off customers who could not necessarily afford a Mercedes. Our client, who has two of them in his collection, is particularly fond of this 1958 coupé, which is remarkable for the condition in which it has been preserved. Initially destined for the American market, as can be seen from its speedometer reading in miles, it was registered on 5 April 1960 at Wiesbaden in Germany, before moving on to a journalist in 1964. Repainted in the past, the body is very sound and has an attractive patina. The two-tone leatherette upholstery is in good used condition, while the carpets have been remade. A rev counter has been added under the dashboard, and the accessories fitted include a period radio. The glove box still contains the car’s original books and there is a valuation report from 2024 in its history file. Maintained by our client’s personal mechanic, this Isabella is in good running order and its exotic nature adds to the appeal of its consistent overall condition, which combines regular maintenance and a lovely patina.
