1968 Shelby GT 500 KR Fastback
The distinctive feature of this Shelby GT 500 KR coupé is that it was the only example of the model sold new in Belgium in 1968, and that it has since had only four owners. It left the Ford plant at Metuchen on 25 July 1968 finished in ‘Acapulco Blue Metallic’ and equipped with disc brakes, power steering, a folding rear seat, ‘tilt-away’ steering wheel, black bucket seats, automatic transmission and a Traction-Lok rear axle with a 3.50:1 final drive ratio. It was the most expensive Mustang on sale and was shipped to the Shelby distributor for Belgium, the charming Claude Dubois, known also for his achievements as a racing driver. He delivered it to its first owner, Marcel Vandoorne, who was followed by two other owners in 1994 and 2002, both of them in the Antwerp area. In 2002, a restoration was started which lasted until 2007 (documented with numerous photographs); once the work was completed, the car won the ‘Best of Show’ prize at the 2007 meeting of the Belgian Mustang & Cougar Club at Borsbeek. In June 2014, it was the subject of a detailed feature in the magazine Chroom & Vlammen and on 28 December 2015, it joined Thierry Dehaeck’s collection. In 2017, it was displayed at the Autoworld Museum in Brussels and went on to take part in several rallies and meetings, including the 2018 Nieuwpoort Drivers Day and the 2025 London Concours at the Honourable Artillery Company. In September 2026, it took part, together with the 500 KR convertible in the collection, in the Concours d’Etat at the Chantilly Arts et Elegance Richard Mille, held on 12/13 September.
In its day, the Shelby GT 500 KR (‘King of the Road’) was the most powerful Mustang in the range, thanks to its 428ci (7013cc) ‘Cobra Jet’ V8 which produced an estimated 450bhp (the official figure of 335bhp was probably underestimated for insurance purposes). Only 1053 Fastback coupé versions were built in 1968 and very few of them made their way to Europe. Extensively documented with bills, old registration papers, a catalogue from the period, its owner’s manual, data card, FIVA ID card and Marti report, this car is especially interesting on account of its condition, rarity, performance and history, which will open the door for it at a wide range of historic events.
