1968 Shelby GT 500 KR convertible

This car is one of the 518 Shelby GT 500 KR (‘King of the Road’) convertibles built in 1968, of which 151 had a four-speed manual gearbox like this example, and 46 were yellow with a black interior. It is therefore a particularly rare car, especially in such immaculate condition and with options including the GT Equipment Group, Visibility Group and Interior Decor Group, as well as a 3.50:1 Traction-Lok rear axle, an electric hood with a glass rear screen and a ‘tilt-away’ steering wheel. Supplied new to the dealer B.J. Werner in Garfield (New Jersey), its first owners are not known, but in 2001 it was bought by a Mr. Antony Alesandro, who had it completely restored, as a result of which it won first prize from the National Antique Automobile Club in 2003 and 2006. On 3 July 2014, it was sold to Jean-Claude Mimran, who, with his brother, had taken over the car maker Lamborghini in 1981 (sold to Chrysler in 1987), and who lived at Gstaad in Switzerland. The car was imported into Europe before being offered at auction in Monaco in May 2016. It was there that Thierry Dehaeck, who already owned a Fastback from the same year, bought it to form a rare duo. On 12/13 September 2026, moreover, it took part in the Concours d’Etat at the Chantilly Arts et Elegance Richard Mille, alongside the GT 500 KR coupé from the collection. Previously, it had been displayed in 2024 at the Belgian National Museum Autoworld.

Thanks to its 428ci (7013cc) ‘Cobra Jet’ V8, it was the most powerful Mustang in the range and the convertible one of the fastest on sale. An icon of the ‘muscle car’ era and Carroll Shelby’s specially built cars, it is in very good condition. Sold with its Marti report and FIVA ID card, this rare GT 500 KR will be sure to attract attention, while giving its owner a real thrill, with the wind whipping his face.
