- Documentation historique importante

1961 Maserati 3500 GT Spyder Vignale
After being built at the Maserati factory in March 1961, this 3500 GT Spyder was supplied new to Sig. Giorgio Pes in Rome on the 23rd of that month, as is confirmed by the delivery note which records its colour as ‘Amaranto Roma’ with a black leather interior. Registered as ‘Roma 519426’, the car was bought on 7 July 1964 by its second owner, a certain Alberto Alfredo, from Naples, and was assigned the new registration number ‘NA 310115’. He kept the car for more than 15 years, before it moved on 17 September 1981 to its third owner, Sig. Giuseppe Russo, who was based in Naples and then in Brescia. He used the car until 1989, by which time its condition was starting to need restoration. Lacking the means, however, to undertake this work, Russo laid up the car at his home without touching it, until 2015.
That year, it was bought by Edoardo Bonanomi, the director at the time of Automobile Tricolore, a well-known restoration workshop near Brescia which specialised in Italian cars from the 1950s and 1960s. Thierry Dehaeck bought the car from him in 2016 and decided to entrust his workshop with the full restoration of the 3500 GT Spyder. It was stripped down to the last nut and bolt, to be completely restored with nothing left to chance. The body was repainted in its magnificent original colour, the upholstery was retrimmed in black leather and the interior completely restored, while the engine and transmission, both of them original, were entirely rebuilt. Two years’ work, from 2016–2018, were needed to achieve an exceptional result.
Once it had been restored, the car was featured in the April 2018 issue of the magazine Automobilismo d’Epoca. Two years later, the 3500 GT Spyder headed to New Delhi in India, for the ‘21 Gun Salute International Vintage Concours d'Elegance’, held in February 2020, where it won ‘Best of Show’.
This Maserati 3500 GT comes with an extensive history file, including its build card, the delivery note to its first owner, a document from the Automobile Club d’Italia confirming the ownership chain, its Maserati Classiche certification, a FIVA ID card, a sales brochure and period owner’s manual and a set of photographs of the restoration, as well as various articles and bills.
This 3500 GT Spyder is much rarer than the closed version, as only 253 units were built (vs. 1975 for the coupé). It is equipped with Maserati’s 3.5-litre six-cylinder twin-cam engine with three carburettors, before the shift to fuel injection and V8 power for the later models, and therefore possesses the strong character of the early versions. Its faultless condition underpins its superb styling by the coachbuilder Vignale, its magnificent finish and noble engine.
